NWU School of Music has a long tradition of bassoon study and performance. This tradition started with Prof Fanie Jooste, who studied bassoon in Detmold, Germany, with Prof Helman Jung. Prof Jooste passed this tradition on to his students. One of his former students, Mr Douglas Bull, plays in the Deutches Sinfonie Orchester (DSO) in Berlin. Mr Bull visits the NWU annually to give masterclasses and make music with colleagues and bassoon students.

The current bassoon lecturer at NWU School of Music, Prof Liesl van der Merwe, completed her doctoral degree in bassoon performance under Prof Fanie Jooste. She started her music career as the principal bassoonist of the National Chamber Orchestra, and has been an ad hoc member of various orchestras such as the JPO, NAPOP, NYO, JFO and NNSO, and a soloist with the NCO and NWU Symphony Orchestra. She also performs in chamber music ensembles, such as Trio Joie de Vivre, and is the conductor of the North-West Youth Orchestra.
Prof van der Merwe teaches for well-being. She fosters positive relationships with her students and engages them during lessons by playing duets with them and using movement when applicable. Prof van der Merwe also supports and facilitates the achievement of her students’ goals. Many of her students have played in the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO), completed their studies and are employed as musicians. She also supports SANYO in their What it takes bassoon courses and have presented masterclasses at these courses since 2015.
