In this article, published in Vir die Musiekleier / To the Director of Music in December 2025, Dr Jaco Meyer traces the development of the Liedboek van die Kerk (Songbook of the Church) from the resolution at the General Synod of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Church in 1982 to compile a hymnal for children and youth, to the eventual publication of the Liedboek in 2001. Drawing on archival documents, committee reports, correspondence, and contemporary reviews, it offers a narrative account of how these collections emerged, how they were received, and how they influenced the broader trajectory of Afrikaans hymnody.
