The School of Music is very excited to welcome two new staff members this year.
Dr Albi Odendaal has been appointed from 1 January 2016 as researcher and lecturer in Music Education. He hails from the Cape where he completed his BMus and MMus studies at the University of Cape Town. After teaching for five years at Hilton College, he earned his DMus in Music Education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. Since returning to South Africa, he has been holding postdoctoral and teaching positions at the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch.
Dr Odendaal says that he is excited to start working with the students and to experience the unique research culture at the School of Music. His message to all students is to work hard!
He is married to Tracy and they have three children, the eldest being in Grade 1 this year. He enjoys outdoor activities and playing squash.
Ms Catrien Wentink starts on 1 February 2016 as lecturer and researcher in Music Theory. She is an alumna of the School of Music, having completed her BMus and MMus studies, as well as the PGCE, at the NWU during the previous decade. Her postgraduate studies included a semester at Youngstown State University, Ohio (USA). She is currently enrolled for the DMus in Piano Performance at the NWU School of Music.
For the past five years, she has been a lecturer of Music for Arts and Culture in the Foundation to Senior phase at the Faculty of Education Sciences.
Ms Wentink says that she is looking forward to the challenges of her new job and to work with colleagues that also make music.
She is married to Gideon Wentink, a researcher in the Africa Centre for Disaster Studies. They have a two-year old son and the next one is expected in March.
