This year’s annual Dean’s Concert at the NWU School of Music is presented in collaboration with the Odeion School of Music from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. Ms Yvonne-Marié Brand, who was last year appointed as brass lecturer at the NWU, and Ms Danrè Strydom (photo above) were music students at the same time at the UFS. Ms Strydom, on her part, was recently appointed as woodwind lecturer at the Odeion School of Music.
This “Intervarsity” concert (in a manner of speaking) will be presented on Tuesday 13 May 2014 at 19:30 in the Conservatory Hall. The two young soloists will be accompanied by Tinus Botha and Cezarre Strydom, respectively, as well as percussionist Geruan Geldenhuys from Bloemfontein. This will also be Ms Brand’s debut performance as a soloist in Potchefstroom. And patrons shouldn’t be anxious: no drop goals will be allowed at any time!
Solo pieces for trumpet and clarinet will be performed alternately, including a concerto or two. The grand finale is a performance by the whole ensemble of Music for a Farce by Paul Bowles, maybe better known as the author of the novel The Sheltering Sky. Patrons will be able to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or fruit juice during the interval, while donations for the School of Music Student Support Fund will be appreciated.
Tickets at R60/R40/R30 are available at the Conservatory in Thabo Mbeki Drive (tel. 018-299-1692), PUK-Arts in the Heimat Building (F9) on the university campus (tel. 018-299-2844), Protea Book Shop on the Bult (tel. 018-297-1583), online at Artéma and Facebook, or 30 minutes before the concert at the box office.
