Umculo workshops and master classes — 4-22 April 2016
The School of Music and NWU Choir Academy®, in collaboration with PUK Arts, will be hosting representatives from Umculo for the next few weeks. Umculo provides “performance and education initiatives and makes international expertise available to a broad network of South African participants and raises international awareness about the creative potential of South Africa’s talent”.
Kobie van Rensburg, a renowned South African tenor who currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany, as well as Robert Lehmeier, a stage director from Germany, will give master classes in singing and dramatic performance to voice students of the School of Music and will also conduct workshops with the PUK Serenaders. Cathy Milliken, an expert in music education and composition, will share her knowledge and experience with staff and students of the NWU and other interested parties in the Potchefstroom community.
The members of Umculo will be joined by acclaimed music journalists Shirley Apthorp and Erling Guldbrandsen who will share their expertise about music journalism. Prof Guldbrandsen, a musicologist from the University of Oslo, and Ms Apthorp guide artists, students and social media users and creators in developing and honing their skills towards efficient communication through “words about music”.
The broader community of the North-West Province will also benefit from the workshops that Umculo and the NWU Choir Academy® will conduct on Saturday 16 April 2016 at the Conservatory. The main focus of these workshops will be on the prescribed repertoire for the solo categories of the South African School Choral Eisteddfod (FET phase). Educators, conductors and learners are invited to attend these workshops. Fees are R200 per person, but learners in school uniform can attend free of charge. Anyone who is interested in attending some of the master classes or workshops should contact Dr Santisa Viljoen at tel. (018) 299-1707 / email@example.com
