Prof Jaco Kruger of the School of Music recently published his third book on Venda culture. The girls in the baobab was produced under the auspices of the MASARA research niche area (Musical Arts in South Africa: Resources & Applications). The collection is the third in a series dedicated towards the preservation and theorisation of Venda oral musical arts. The first volume, Venda lashu, appeared in 2004, and its content was collected by students at Venda University. The second volume, entitled The flamboyant rooster and other stories, appeared in 2007, and it is based on material collected during the early 1990s for a doctoral thesis by Ina le Roux, an external member of the project.

The girls in the baobab is a collection of Venda ngano stories from South Africa’s Limpopo Valley. These ancient stories integrate prose with chants and songs. Their meanings link with universal images as well as the lives of narrators that have been swept along almost unnoticed by currents of modern history. The collection includes an introduction, song transcriptions, a guide to pronunciation and performance instructions.

The book was officially launched at a special event on 15 October 2013 in Potchefstroom, attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof Jan Swanepoel, both Vice-Rectors of the Potchefstroom campus, Prof Amanda Lourens and Prof Mariëtte Lowes, contributors to the publication of the book, and colleagues from the School of Music and the rest of the faculty.
