A number of singers who studied at the NWU School of Music have made successful performing careers overseas, mainly in Europe. Jacques le Roux is one of these singers, currently engaged as the principal tenor at the Landestheater Linz in Austria. Since leaving South Africa in 2007, he has achieved numerous successes, including being named as the Young Artist of the Year for 2010 by the German Theatre and Orchestra.
Dr Santisa Viljoen visited Austria during the first two weeks of October to deliver a paper at a conference on Music, Gender & Difference at the University of Music & Performing Arts in Vienna. This institution is the alma mater of vocalists such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Hanno Blaschke, and South Africa’s most famous soprano, Mimi Coertse. The conference focused on the relevance of gender and gender construction in music within.
