Franz Schubert is the undisputed master of the Romantic song and his two song cycles on poems by Wilhelm Müller, Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, are generally considered to be the most important works in that genre. Although some of the songs are performed individually in recitals, they are intended to be heard all together as a complete unit, telling the story of a man who has lost his beloved to someone else and now tries to leave it all behind. Considering the demands that it makes on the performers, both physically and emotionally, it is therefore a rare opportunity to hear the song cycle performed in its entirety by a masterful singer and pianist.

Maarten Koningsberger

It is even more of an opportunity not to be missed when those performers are Maarten Koningsberger (baritone) and Albie van Schalkwyk (piano). Koningsberger, from the Netherlands, is a highly-regarded singer performing with the most important orchestras and conductors in the major concert venues in Europe, the Far East, and North America. He has also appeared on numerous CD recordings, including that of Winterreise with pianist Roger Braun. Albie van Schalkwyk is one of the leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists in South Africa and is regularly requested to accompany visiting musicians.
