What are your funniest / fondest memories of your time at the Conservatory?
• My fellow students and I convinced our professor once to present the lecture in a coffee shop! We were a fairly small group, so it was actually quite manageable.
• In our first year we had a group assignment to write a Blues song. My group’s song was about music theory and it turned out to be a very funny!
• During one of my flute performance exams, the pages of my music got stuck together. When I wanted to start the fourth part of the suite I was playing, I accidentally turned two pages instead of one. The result was a couple of bars of mash-up between the fourth movement’s accompaniment and the fifth movement’s flute part. Obviously we stopped, corrected the pages and started the movement again. But I could hardly contain my giggles… And there were still five movements to go!
• Potchpourri is always fun, especially with a couple of ‘incidents’, like page turners’ buttons getting caught on pianists’ wigs.
• Aural training exams in winter, very early in the morning (car windows would freeze), accompanied by some hot soup and buns.
• Those ‘eureka’ moments in theory class.
• Ensemble exams. I’ve played with a variety of other instruments: harp, flute, guitar, violin, cello, clarinet and even did a work with soprano.
