Love is in the air when staff of the NWU School of Music, joined by colleagues from elsewhere, perform the Liebeslieder Waltzes for vocal quartet and piano duet by Johannes Brahms. It is the main work at a concert on Tuesday 11 August at 19:30 in the Conservatory Hall.

The texts of the 18 Liebeslieder come from an eclectic collection of East-European love poems and folk verses which were translated into German and then set by Brahms in 1869. Antoinette Olivier (soprano), Jana Mathee (mezzo soprano), Chris Mostert (tenor) and Dolf Mathee (baritone) are accompanied by Tinus Botha and Waldo Weyer at the piano.

Each of the singers will also perform two other songs by Brahms in the first half of the programme, while the pianists will present a collection of Brahms’ popular Hungarian dances.

Tickets at R75/R50 are available at the Conservatory in Thabo Mbeki Drive (tel. 018-299-1692), PUK Arts in the Heimat Building (F9) on the university campus (tel. 018-299-2844), Protea Bookshop on the Bult (tel. 018-297-1583), online at www.artema.co.za and www.facebook.com/NWU.Music, or 30 minutes before the concert at the box office.
