The harpsichord is generally considered to be mainly an instrument of Baroque music and was superseded by the development of the piano in the late 18th century. Concerts featuring the harpsichord, especially as a solo instrument, are therefore few and far inbetween. It is even more of a rarity when two harpsichords are featured in the same concert. But this is exactly what will happen when two local musicians, John Reid Coulter and Jetty de Vries, present a programme of works for two harpsichords on Sunday 24 August 2014 at 15:30 in the Pretorius Music Studio at the Conservatory.

The concert is entitled Les cordes partout, which means “with only strings” or “with strings everywhere”. Compositions by the most famous of Baroque composers such as JS Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, will be featured alongside less well-known pieces by John Dowland, François Couperin and Johann Ludwig Krebs. There will even be a contemporary composition by Simon Jeffes, based on traditional mbira music from Zimbabwe.

Due to the intimate size of the Pretorius Music Studio, seating is very limited. Tickets at R60/R40/R30 are available at the Conservatory in Thabo Mbeki Drive (tel. 018-299-1692), PUK-Arts in the Heimat Building (F9) on the university campus (tel. 018-299-2844), Protea Book Shop on the Bult (tel. 018-297-1583), online at www.artema.co.za and www.facebook.com/NWU.Music, or 30 minutes before the concert at the box office.
