One of the functions of the choir in opera and operetta is to enhance the dramatic aspects of the narrative. The combination of choir and soloist very often results in some of the most moving and exciting moments in the performance. On Sunday 31 August 2014 at 15:30 the Conservatory Choir of the NWU School of Music, directed by Santisa Viljoen and accompanied by Jana Mathee, will present a programme of works from well-loved operas and operettas in the Conservatory Hall.

The concert is entitled Canzoni da Opere e Operette (Songs from Opera and Operetta) and will entertain the audience with well-known choral works, ensembles and solos by famous composers such as Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi and Johann Strauss, Jr. Soprano Antoinette Olivier will be the guest artist, performing arias by Verdi & Wagner with the choir.

Tickets at R60/R40/R30 are available at the Conservatory in Thabo Mbeki Drive (tel. 018-299-1692), PUK-Arts in the Heimat Building (F9) on the university campus (tel. 018-299-2844), Protea Book Shop on the Bult (tel. 018-297-1583), online at www.artema.co.za and www.facebook.com/NWU.Music, or 30 minutes before the concert at the box office.
