Operatic extracts for choir and soloists — 15 October 2015
In the penultimate concert of the NWU School of Music’s 2015 concert series, the Conservatory Choir and vocal soloists, under the direction of Santisa Viljoen, will present extracts from four well-known operas. The majority comes from Mozart’s popular The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro, with further arias, ensembles and choral works from Franz Léhar’s entertaining The Merry Widow, and Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin. Jana Mathee provides support on the piano.
As an exception, this concert will be presented on a Thursday night: 15 October 2015 at 19:30 in the Conservatory Hall.
In preparation for this concert, the students didn’t only work with the vocal lecturers at the School of Music, but also received master classes from two international guest lecturers. Prof Yvonne Schiffelers teaches at the Maastricht Conservatory in the Netherlands, and Janice Dixon is a freelance soprano and singing teacher from Germany with a very successful singing career in Europe. These two experts were continuously part of the process and listened to the students by means of technology, giving advice and making suggestions for suitable repertoire. It is part of Dr Santisa Viljoen’s research project on innovation in vocal teaching.
